Day 1: Udzungwa Rainforest Trek and Sanje Waterfalls
Early Morning Pick-Up and Airport Transfer
Begin with an early pick-up from your hotel or resort in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. Transfer to Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) for your planned journey toward the Udzungwa Mountains area. Flight availability, routing and departure times must be confirmed before travel.
Arrival and Transfer to Udzungwa Mountains National Park
After arrival at the confirmed airstrip, meet your driver-guide and continue by road to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Meet the authorized park ranger or guide, complete the required entry arrangements and receive a briefing about the forest trail, wildlife observation and hiking safety.
Guided Sanje Waterfalls Rainforest Hike
Set off along the Sanje Waterfalls Trail through lush tropical and montane forest. The route includes uneven terrain and steep sections, so a reasonable level of fitness and suitable hiking footwear are important. Along the way, discover the forest’s rich plant life and listen for birds and other wildlife as your guide explains this unique ecosystem.
Search for Endemic Primates
Keep watch among the forest canopy for wildlife, including the endemic Sanje crested mangabey and Udzungwa red colobus monkey. Your guide will help you look for signs of wildlife and explain the importance of protecting these rare species. Sightings are not guaranteed because animals move freely through the forest.
Sanje Waterfalls Viewpoint and Picnic Lunch
Reach the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls, which descend approximately 170 metres through the forested mountainside. Enjoy the views across the Kilombero Valley, take photographs from permitted viewpoints and pause for your packed picnic lunch in a suitable designated area. Swimming should only take place if park authorities permit it and local water conditions are confirmed safe; access to plunge pools may be restricted.
Return Hike and Transfer to the Airstrip
After enjoying the waterfall area, retrace the trail with your guide and return to the park entrance. Transfer by road to the confirmed airstrip, allowing sufficient time for check-in and any changes in the flight schedule.
Return Flight and Hotel Transfer
Board your confirmed return flight to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, subject to the available schedule. On arrival, meet your arranged transfer back to your hotel or resort, concluding your rainforest and waterfall adventure.
