Day Itinerary
Early Morning Pick-Up in Sumbawanga or Mbala
Begin with an early pick-up from your hotel or lodge in Sumbawanga, Tanzania, or Mbala, Zambia, depending on your selected starting point. Meet your driver-guide and travel through scenic highland countryside toward the Kalambo Falls area. Border formalities may be required if your route crosses between the two countries, so ensure that your travel documents and entry requirements are in order.
Guided Kalambo Falls Gorge Hike
Meet your local site guide and begin the hike toward Kalambo Falls. Follow designated trails through the natural landscape toward viewpoints overlooking the dramatic gorge. As the waterfall comes into view, appreciate the scale of the sheer cliff and the surrounding wilderness. Your guide will explain the area’s natural features and help you navigate the approved walking routes safely.
Cliff Viewpoints, Birdlife and Archaeological Heritage
Stop at suitable viewpoints to admire the waterfall and deep gorge from permitted locations. Learn about the archaeological discoveries associated with the Kalambo River area, including evidence of ancient human activity and stone-tool traditions. Keep an eye out for birds, including marabou storks where present, while enjoying the surrounding forest and cliff scenery. Access to individual viewpoints depends on trail conditions and local safety guidance.
Scenic Picnic Lunch
Pause at an approved picnic spot to enjoy lunch and rest while taking in the views of the gorge and surrounding countryside. This break provides time to recharge before continuing the day’s outdoor exploration.

Continue toward the Lake Tanganyika area, where conditions and the selected route permit, for a scenic walk and views across the lake’s vast waters. Enjoy the peaceful shoreline and the dramatic landscapes shaped by the East African Rift Valley.
