Day 1 – Materuni Waterfall Hike & Traditional Chagga Coffee Tour
Pick-Up in Moshi or Arusha & Drive to Materuni Village
Begin your morning with pick-up from your hotel or resort in Moshi or Arusha. Airport transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) can be arranged in advance. Enjoy a scenic drive through the fertile foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to Materuni Village, a traditional Chagga settlement surrounded by coffee farms, banana groves, and lush greenery.
Guided Rainforest Hike to Materuni Waterfall
Meet your local Chagga guide and begin a guided hike through village paths, tropical vegetation, coffee shambas, and banana plantations. Along the way, learn about local farming practices, village life, and the area’s natural environment. The trail includes uneven and sometimes muddy sections, so comfortable hiking shoes are recommended.
Discover Materuni Waterfall
Reach the spectacular Materuni Waterfall, where water cascades down a high forested cliff into a natural pool below. Take time to appreciate the scenery, photograph the waterfall, and enjoy the cool mountain atmosphere. Swimming may be possible when water conditions are suitable and your local guide confirms it is safe.
Traditional Chagga Coffee-Making Experience
Return to a local Chagga homestead for an interactive farm-to-cup coffee experience. Learn how Arabica coffee is traditionally processed, from preparing and roasting the beans to hand-grinding and brewing. Participate in the process, enjoy traditional Chagga songs and dances when offered by your hosts, and taste a freshly brewed cup of local coffee.
Authentic Chagga Lunch
Enjoy a freshly prepared local lunch featuring traditional Chagga or Swahili dishes. Relax with your hosts and learn more about local food traditions, agriculture, and daily life in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Return Transfer to Moshi or Arusha
After your waterfall hike and cultural experience, meet your driver-guide for a comfortable return transfer to your hotel or agreed drop-off point in Moshi or Arusha. Drop-off at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) can be arranged in advance. Arrival time depends on the starting point, trail conditions, and time spent at the village.
