Day 1 – Marangu Gate, Rainforest Trek & Mandara Hut
Pick-Up from Arusha or Kilimanjaro & Mountain Hiking Adventure
Begin your day with an early morning pick-up from your preferred hotel, residence, or airport in Arusha, including Arusha Airport (ARK), or in Kilimanjaro, including Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Moshi Town. Travel to Marangu Gate on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, where you will complete park registration and receive a safety briefing before starting your hike with a licensed mountain guide.
Start trekking along the scenic Marangu Route through the lush montane rainforest. Follow the established trail beneath towering trees and dense vegetation while looking out for black-and-white colobus monkeys, colourful birdlife, and distinctive mountain plants. Your guide will share information about the mountain’s ecology, wildlife, and hiking conditions as you gradually gain elevation.
Continue towards Mandara Hut at approximately 2,720 metres above sea level, taking breaks along the way to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the forest scenery. Hiking time varies according to fitness, trail conditions, and the group’s pace.
After reaching Mandara Hut, enjoy a short excursion towards nearby Maundi Crater if time, weather, and trail conditions permit. On clear days, the viewpoint offers sweeping views across northern Tanzania and, sometimes, towards Kenya. Take a break for your packed picnic lunch before preparing for the return hike.
Descend along the Marangu Route through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Complete the required park exit procedures before meeting your driver for a comfortable late-afternoon transfer to your preferred hotel, residence, or airport in Arusha or Kilimanjaro.
